† Holy Bible

What the Catholic Encyclopedia has to say about the Bible.

• Douay-Rheims Bible Online Catholic

The Douay-Rheims bible is this webmaster's favorite since it was the first translated bible to ever to be placed online to free access for everyone without fearing copyright infringement. The Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque Catholic Church of Hammond, IN used this online bible exclusively in 1998, 1999, and 2000 to aid our online webpilgrims in their study and personal edification of Sacred Scripture. We are sure you will enjoy it. It has a real, in-your-face punch to it. This bible certainly does not take prisoners. It is not in any way ultra-banal like most contemporary bibles. It says what it means forcefully. The Holy Bible text on this web site has been converted from the 1899 edition of the John Murphy Company, Baltimore, Maryland. Although "Challoner Revision" may be the most accurate title for this version of the Holy Bible, it was ca lled, and continues to be called, "The Douay-Rheims Version". This first, Catholic, online bible is often erroneously associated with the Gutenberg Project. This site is faithful to the 1899 edition and retains the title "Douay-Rhiems Version".

• Hypertext Spanish Bible Catholic

The Hypertext Spanish Bible is purportedly in the public domain as translated into Spanish by Aaron Cardenas, a student at Massechussetts Institute of Technology. As he was graduated, he left this online bible in the custody of Sefnar Palmer Morales from Mexico. This Online Spanish Bible was used by the Saint Margaret Mary Catholic Church of Hammond, IN exclusively for its Spanish translations in 1998 and 1999 to aid our online webpilgrims in their study and personal edificaiton of Sacred Scripture. It reads choppy and has a Puerto Rican dialect-flair to it.

• New American Bible Online Catholic

The Online Copyright to the New American Bible belongs to the National Conference of Catholic Bishops/United States Catholic Conference, now the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: And they will not let you forget it either. This is the bible that is cited in Roman Catholic Lectionaries for Mass (Liturgical Celebration) in the United States of America only. Did you ever force yourself, out of hospitality, to listen to someone that you really did not like, only to end up having a headache after they got done rambling on in useless dialogue? Well, that is how you will feel after reading some of this bible. It is totally spineless and seemingly filled with hot air. It tries so hard to read like the flowing and the eloquent Anglican New King James Version of the bible, while trying to be super-duper, ultra-contemporary, and fails immensely. Each new translation seems to just get worse. If you must use this bible, do not forget to offer up this sacrifice to Our Lord. It is bad enough that Catholics have to suffer through this drool every Sunday. It reads more like, a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of Jesus said...," rather than, "Jesus said...."God bless the NCCB/USCC for their effort though. They meant well. Pardon my bark, at least we have this bible online for study. †

The Vulgate Online

This is the "Vulgate" in Latin. I suspect that it was labored into reality by the devout hands of a pious Protestant as the book name references are those of Protestant making. For example, "Osee" is Hosea, et cetera. A very nice accomplishment on Gopher root at ftp.std.com. This will come in handy for informal bible study, provided you know Latin.

Revised Standard Version

The Revised Standard Version of the Bible is copyright © National Council of Churches of Christ in America and distributed to registered users with their kind permission. For the 20th-century translation, this one was used by some Catholics for about a decade. This full version herein, including deuterocanonical books (filed under "Apocrypha"), can be helpful for informal, Catholic bible study. Although this is the Protestant RSV, most passages in the Online RSV's seem to be identical to those in the Catholic-approved editions of the RSV (which are not online), with the exception of some missing books and chapters in some Online editions. The National Council of Churches of Christ in America and the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Computer Analysis of Texts (CCAT) is the author of this handy, WWW-accessible version.

awmach.org Catholic bibles included

WOW. This is awmach.org churches' directory. This is a Fundamentalist resource site that is definitely a labor of love. Although Fundamentalist, they offer free downloads of bibles that are in the public domain on the internet. Here is a list: the Authorized King James Version, the John Nelson Darby, the Douay-Rheims/Challoner (Catholic), the Mark Webster, the Robert Young, the French-language Louis Segard, the German-language Martin Luther, the Italian-language Riveduta/Luzzi, the Portuguese-language Joaõ Ferreira, the Spanish-language Reina Valera 1909 (Catholic), the Latin Vulgate (Contemporary Catholic/Christian update of the original), the Greek NT bibles.
